A bilingual site for a fermented set-lunch restaurant in Fujigaoka. One soup and three sides, changing weekly.
Overview
Mille Grass serves a weekly-changing fermented set lunch. The site has three jobs: explain what a fermented set lunch is, show the food honestly, and make it easy to check whether the restaurant is open right now. The owner cooks all day, so it also has to be easy to update: the menu is a single photo, and each month's opening days are generated automatically.
What We Did
A menu the owner can actually update
The paper menu is published as a photo that opens to full size. No dish names or prices live in the code, so updating the menu just means replacing one image. For a restaurant that changes its tray weekly, that keeps the site current without any extra work.
Opening days that generate themselves
The current month's calendar is generated automatically from the opening rules: closed Sunday and Monday, 11:30 to 18:00 on Saturday, 11:30 to 14:30 on weekdays. Nobody has to update it by hand, and visitors can see at a glance whether the restaurant is open today.
The same site in English
The language toggle swaps every string instantly, with no page reload. Fujigaoka has enough non-Japanese residents to make English worth having, and both languages live in one file, so the two versions can't drift apart.
